Lay Leaders
For minds to think, and hearts to love,
and hands to serve, we thank You, Lord
(BCP, 837)
Licensed Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LLEM, also called Lay Leaders) answer the call when God invites us to share in the great existence of the "I am".
Purpose/goals of ministry/program
The mission of the Licensed Lay Eucharistic Ministers of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration is to assist the clergy in:
- leading public worship
- distribution of The Holy Communion
- reading of The Scriptures
All LLEM must be licensed by the Bishop of the Washington Diocese and work directly under the supervision of the Rector as provided for the Canons of the Episcopal Church. LLEM may also be licensed to perform other duties, including (but not limited to):
- Eucharistic Visitor, authorized to take the Consecrated Elements to members of the congregation who are ill and unable to be present at The Holy Communion
- Lay Preacher, authorized to preach under the direction of the Rector
Meeting location(s)and meeting dates
LLEM are scheduled, on a rotational basis, to serve at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. Sunday services, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Christmas Eve and other special services as determined by the Rector. LLEM may also be called on to assist at weddings, funerals and the Sunday 5:00 p.m. service.
When needed, a meeting may be called by the Rector and/or the Head Lay Leader. Meetings are usually held in the parish hall or library at an agreed upon date/time. A one-day retreat is sometimes scheduled and held at a site away from the church building.
