Colesville Community Council of Churches (C-4)
C-4 Overview
C-4 was established in the 1960s to bring the community together in service. Since that time, C-4 has reached out and touched thousands of individuals and families, and continues to provide emergency assistance and make a long-term difference in the lives of many people. C-4 has shown that even small communities can have a big impact on surrounding social concerns. Transfiguration is one of 21 community religious congregations who compose C-4's membership and support its work.
The core of C-4's community involvement is located in the old Colesville Elementary School at 14015 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland, where rooms are provided by Montgomery County. From these rooms, the Clothes Closet, Baby Closet, and Toy Closet are staffed by C-4 volunteers, ready to assist the community.
C-4 accomplishments epitomize the generous character of Transfiguration and other community congregation volunteers. With no anticipation of recognition or praise, these local citizens leave the comfort of their homes and seek out areas of concern where they make a difference.
C-4 Clothes Closet
The Clothes Closet anchors the base of C4's operations and provides Montgomery County families with free donated clothing, household goods, and miscellaneous items, like books, toys, etc. School supplies and backpacks are typically collected by member congregations and distributed in August to students from kindergarten to 12th grade. A strong community involvement in donating clothing, household goods, and other requirements for the Clothes Closet has always been a key to the success of C-4's operations.
C-4 Baby Closet
The Baby Closet provides clothing, furniture, strollers, and other essentials to expectant mothers, infants and toddlers. The Clothes Closet and Baby Closet are open to clients on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for handicapped clients. Volunteers from the C-4 member congregations sort the clothing and help the clients select goods. Transfiguration is responsible for staffing these volunteer positions in January and July, but help is needed every month if you have available time to drop by and help.
C-4 Toy Closet
Each December clients may select toys for their children between the ages of 1 and 12. Toys are collected throughout the year by C-4 member congregations, then on distribution day, the clients "shop" for their children, and are allowed to pick out new, age appropriate toys for each child. Transfiguration collects toys in late November and early December for donation to the Toy Closet. Transfiguration's Boy Scout Troop 1444 also collects toys and helps C-4 on toy distribution day.
